Sponsor:    Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Michael J. (MJFF)

Amount Available:    $250,000
Grant Program:    Target Validation – Edmond J. Safra Core Program for PD Research

Research into the etiology and pathophysiology of Parkinson's Disease (PD) has identified an increasing number of genetic and cellular targets where therapeutic intervention could benefit people with PD. However, translation of scientific discoveries into therapeutic interventions requires additional applied work. Specifically, validation studies must be done to determine whether manipulating the availability or function of a biological target can impact a disease-relevant pathway and ultimately demonstrate beneficial potential.

Sponsor:    Gerber Foundation

Amount Available:    $400,000

Grant Program:    Pediatric Nutrition Grants

The mission of the Gerber Foundation, to enhance the quality of life of infants and young children in nutrition, care, and development, has remained the guiding beacon for Foundation giving throughout its history. Accordingly, priority is given to projects whose primary beneficiaries are young children from birth to three years of age. The Foundation gives priority to projects of national or regional impact. Projects should be sufficiently focused to make a felt difference in the field of interest. On occasion and at the discretion of the Trustees, the Foundation may fund projects in which the research will be conducted outside of the United States; the case must be made for conducting the research outside of the United States. Laboratory studies are funded occasionally. However, the Foundation expects that the basic science is a preliminary step required to support a clinical trial.

Amount Available:    $25,000

Grant Program:    Early Career Award Program

The Fund is open to a variety of research topics important to children's health. Both incidence and severity are considered when determining the significance of a problem being studied.

In the Early Career Award Program, the Fund is particularly interested in applicants that show great potential to impact that field of children's health through medical research. Both an applicant's aptitude and inclination toward research are considered. The quality of the mentor and the mentoring relationship are also considered to be important predictors of success.

Sponsor:    Elsa U. Pardee Foundation

Amount Available:    $100,000 +/-

Grant Program:    Cancer Research Grants

The Elsa U. Pardee Foundation funds investigators proposing research directed toward identifying new treatments or cures for cancer. The foundation particularly encourages grant applications for a one-year period which will allow establishment of capabilities of new cancer researchers, or new cancer approaches by established cancer researchers. It is anticipated that this early stage funding by the foundation may lead to subsequent and expanded support using government agency funding. Project relevance to cancer detection, treatment, or cure should be clearly identified.

Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education (TSFRE)

Amount Available:    $750,000

Grant Program:    TSFRE/NCI Jointly Sponsored Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Awards (TSFRE/NCI MCSDA)

The Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education (TSFRE) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) wish to announce a program of jointly sponsored Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Awards (K08), and Mentored Patient Oriented Research Career Development Awards (K23) directed at thoracic surgeons in the early stages of their research careers.

The purpose of the Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (MCSDA) is to support the development of outstanding research scientists. This mechanism provides support for clinically trained professionals who are committed to a career in laboratory or field-based research and have the potential to develop into independent investigators.

The award supports a five year period of supervised research experience that integrates didactic studies with laboratory or clinically-based research. The proposed research should have both intrinsic research importance and be a vehicle for learning the methodology, theories, and conceptualizations necessary for career development of an independent researcher.

The Mentored Patient Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23) is designed to support the training of clinically trained professionals who have made a commitment to focus on patient-oriented research. For the purpose of this award, patient-oriented research is research conducted with human subjects (or on material of human origin such as tissues, specimens, and cognitive phenomena) for which an investigator interacts directly with human subjects. This award may also be used to support a patient-oriented research focused career development and research training experience in translational research. (Translational research uses knowledge of human biology to develop and test the feasibility of cancer-relevant interventions in humans or determines the biological basis for observations made in individuals with cancer or in populations at risk for cancer.)
