Research Funding Opportunities – deadlines in April 2012 Chris Bonner, Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations Sponsor: Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Michael J. (MJFF) Amount Available: $250,000 Research into the etiology and pathophysiology of Parkinson's Disease (PD) has identified an increasing number of genetic and cellular targets where therapeutic intervention could benefit people with PD. However, translation of scientific discoveries into therapeutic interventions requires additional applied work. Specifically, validation studies must be done to determine whether manipulating the availability or function of a biological target can impact a disease-relevant pathway and ultimately demonstrate beneficial potential. COS: http://fundingopps.cos.com/cgi-bin/fo2/getRec?id=129926&if=search Sponsor: Gerber Foundation Amount Available: $400,000 Grant Program: Pediatric Nutrition Grants The mission of the Gerber Foundation, to enhance the quality of life of infants and young children in nutrition, care, and development, has remained the guiding beacon for Foundation giving throughout its history. Accordingly, priority is given to projects whose primary beneficiaries are young children from birth to three years of age. The Foundation gives priority to projects of national or regional impact. Projects should be sufficiently focused to make a felt difference in the field of interest. On occasion and at the discretion of the Trustees, the Foundation may fund projects in which the research will be conducted outside of the United States; the case must be made for conducting the research outside of the United States. Laboratory studies are funded occasionally. However, the Foundation expects that the basic science is a preliminary step required to support a clinical trial. COS: http://fundingopps.cos.com/cgi-bin/fo2/getRec?id=81946&if=search _____________________________________________________________ Amount Available: $300,000 Grant Program: Grant The Thrasher Research Fund remains open to a variety of pediatric medical research topics. Research projects with the potential to impact a large number of children as well as research projects that address severe problems affecting relatively few children will be considered. The fund seeks to maintain a portfolio of grants with a balance of both domestic and international research. COS: http://www.thrasherresearch.org/sites/www_thrasherresearch_org/Default.aspx?page=37 _____________________________________________________________ Amount Available: $25,000 Grant Program: Early Career Award Program The Fund is open to a variety of research topics important to children's health. Both incidence and severity are considered when determining the significance of a problem being studied. In the Early Career Award Program, the Fund is particularly interested in applicants that show great potential to impact that field of children's health through medical research. Both an applicant's aptitude and inclination toward research are considered. The quality of the mentor and the mentoring relationship are also considered to be important predictors of success. COS: http://fundingopps.cos.com/cgi-bin/fo2/getRec?id=100040&if=search _____________________________________________________________ Amount Available: $200,000 Grant Program: Clinical Research The CHF supports clinical and basic science research in congenital heart disease, including, but not limited to the following areas: molecular genetics, biochemistry, pharmacology, devices and procedural research (cardiac catheterization and surgery), and long-term care of adults with congenital birth defects. COS: none Amount Available: $200,000 Grant Program: Alzheimer’s Disease Drug Discovery Research, Pilot Studies The Edward N. & Della L. Thome Memorial Foundation was created in 2002 to advance the health of older adults through the support of direct service projects and medical research on diseases and disorders affecting older adults. In keeping with the Foundation’s mission, we are pleased to announce the 2012 Awards Program in Alzheimer’s Disease Drug Discovery Research. The goal of the 2012 Awards Program is to support pilot studies towards innovative drug discovery research that will lead to improved therapies for individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. COS: none _____________________________________________________________ Amount Available: $450,000 Grant Program: Innovation Awards The Foundation encourages all theoretical and experimental research relevant to the study of cancer and the search for cancer causes, mechanisms, therapies and prevention. Deadlines: Pre-Proposal due June 1, 2012 COS: none _____________________________________________________________ Sponsor: Elsa U. Pardee Foundation Amount Available: $100,000 +/- Grant Program: Cancer Research Grants The Elsa U. Pardee Foundation funds investigators proposing research directed toward identifying new treatments or cures for cancer. The foundation particularly encourages grant applications for a one-year period which will allow establishment of capabilities of new cancer researchers, or new cancer approaches by established cancer researchers. It is anticipated that this early stage funding by the foundation may lead to subsequent and expanded support using government agency funding. Project relevance to cancer detection, treatment, or cure should be clearly identified. COS: http://fundingopps.cos.com/cgi-bin/fo2/getRec?id=3367&if=search _____________________________________________________________ Amount Available: $750,000 Grant Program: TSFRE/NCI Jointly Sponsored Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Awards (TSFRE/NCI MCSDA) The Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education (TSFRE) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) wish to announce a program of jointly sponsored Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Awards (K08), and Mentored Patient Oriented Research Career Development Awards (K23) directed at thoracic surgeons in the early stages of their research careers. The purpose of the Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (MCSDA) is to support the development of outstanding research scientists. This mechanism provides support for clinically trained professionals who are committed to a career in laboratory or field-based research and have the potential to develop into independent investigators. The award supports a five year period of supervised research experience that integrates didactic studies with laboratory or clinically-based research. The proposed research should have both intrinsic research importance and be a vehicle for learning the methodology, theories, and conceptualizations necessary for career development of an independent researcher. COS: http://fundingopps.cos.com/cgi-bin/fo2/getRec?id=87231&if=search Amount Available: $750,000 Grant Program: TSFRE/NCI Mentored Patient Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23) The Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education (TSFRE) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) wish to announce a program of jointly sponsored Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Awards (K08), and Mentored Patient Oriented Research Career Development Awards (K23) directed at thoracic surgeons in the early stages of their research careers. The Mentored Patient Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23) is designed to support the training of clinically trained professionals who have made a commitment to focus on patient-oriented research. For the purpose of this award, patient-oriented research is research conducted with human subjects (or on material of human origin such as tissues, specimens, and cognitive phenomena) for which an investigator interacts directly with human subjects. This award may also be used to support a patient-oriented research focused career development and research training experience in translational research. (Translational research uses knowledge of human biology to develop and test the feasibility of cancer-relevant interventions in humans or determines the biological basis for observations made in individuals with cancer or in populations at risk for cancer.) COS: http://fundingopps.cos.com/cgi-bin/fo2/getRec?id=87232&if=search _____________________________________________________________ Amount Available: $675,000 Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Therapeutics, Inc. (CFFT), the nonprofit drug discovery and development affiliate of the CF Foundation, offers competitive awards to support clinical research projects directly related to CF treatment and care. Projects may address diagnostic or therapeutic methods related to CF or the pathophysiology of CF, and applicants must demonstrate access to a sufficient number of CF patients from CF Foundation-accredited care centers and to appropriate controls.
