Dr. Thomas E. Van Dyke, Director of the Clinical Research Center at the Goldman School of Dentistry, has been awarded a grant from Brigham and Women's Hospital and NIH/NIDCR for "Specialized Center for Anti-Inflammation and Resolution in Periodontal Disease Project 3". The award will assist him and his team of multidisciplinary experts in the Center to further knowledge regarding oral infections that lead to local persistent inflammation that when "uncontrolled" give rise to periodontal diseases, a costly public health concern

Dr. Karen M. Freund, of The BU Center of Excellence in Women's Health was awarded a grant by the Office of Women's  of the Food and Drug Administration to study the outcomes after stent placement in women and men.  The goals of the project are to understand any gender differences in outcomes after the use of cardiac stents.   Utilizing a unique database developed by Medicare with collaboration of Dr. Arlene Ash, the study will be able to specifically address the outcomes after stent placement for men and women within ethnic and racial minority groups.  Dr. Karen Freund, Director of the Center of Excellence in Women's Health and Chief of the Women's Health Unit will lead the project.  Collaborators on the project include Arlene Ash PhD, Research Professor of Medicine and head of the Health Care Research Unit, and Alice Jacobs MD Professor of Medicine, and Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Interventional Cardiology.
