Place – the physical availability of alcohol – is an important factor in rates of alcohol use and related problems.

Availability encompasses when, where and how alcohol is sold and served. Much of the Center’s work focuses on the commercial availability of alcohol, including how to influence the density of alcohol outlets in a community, and tools such as commercial host liability that can affect the policies and practices of alcohol outlets.

The Center seeks to promote planning, implementation and evaluation of prevention strategies recommended by the independent, non-federal Community Preventive Services Task Force. These recommendations are based on systematic reviews of the available scientific evidence of the effectiveness of public health strategies in preventing excessive alcohol consumption and related harms.
